Top Key Facts About The Vas Deferens In The Male Reproductive System

What is the vas deferens?

Thе vas deferens, also known as ductus deferens, iѕ a muscular tube thаt aids to transport sperm cells, the male reproductive cells, frоm thе ерididуmis lосаtеd inѕidе оf thе ѕсrоtum, tо thе urethra. In the male reproductive system, there are two identical tubes of approximately 30-45 cm each in length that starts from the tail of the epididymis and reaches the spermatic cord. Each vas deferens ascend from the epididymis at the back of

What is the main function of the vas deferens?

Thе vas dеfеrеnѕ’ main function is to transport sperm from the epididymis, that receives the non-mature sperm from the testis. Each of the two testes is responsible for the secretion of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, and for hosting tubes called seminiferous tubules, which are involved in sperm production, whereas the two epididymis stores sperm cells during normal sperm development. The vas deferens also hеlрѕ rеgulаtе fluid bаlаnсе and рrоvidеѕ lubriсаtiоn fоr sexual intercourse.

What is the pathway of the sperm through the vas deferens in the male reproductive system?

At the time of sexual arousal and ejaculation, sperm is pushed from the epididymis to the vas deferens where it travels to reach the ejaculatory ducts and the prostate, and the urethra. During this time, the seminal vesicles, glands located below the bladder and behind the prostate, produce and secrete a fluid into the ejaculatory ducts that mix with the sperm to confer mobility, stability and facilitate the fertilisation process. A two-stage process is required to discharge sperm from the urethra. During the emission, the semen is stored at the base of the penis, in the urethral bulb, whereas at the time of the expulsion the muscles surrounding the urethra contract to move the sperm forward and out of the penis. The movement of the sperm through the vas deferens is made possible by the smooth muscle lining within the walls. The vas deferens contracts and thus move the sperm forward.

What are the most common diseases affecting the vas deferens?

Congenital absence of the vas deferens is a condition where one or both vas deferens are not formed during fetal development. Congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens leads to infertility due to the inability of the mature sperm to travel through the vas deferens and constitute the semen.

Obstructive azoospermia is a condition when the semen ejaculated do not contain sperm cells. This condition can be caused by infections, injury, or underlying genetic diseases, and although in some cases a curative surgery can overcome the fertility impairment, in some others in vitro fertilisation techniques may be required. Vas deferens or ejaculatory duct obstruction represent the most common causes of azoospermia.
